Faith And Failures Podcast

Have Christians Taken THIS Too Far

August 26, 2024 Stephen Tilmon

Is there a line between faith and politics, and have we crossed it? This episode pulls back the curtain on the alarming trend of some Christians elevating political figures like Donald Trump to a near-divine status. We dissect the misuse of biblical scriptures, originally meant for Jesus, that have been hijacked to bolster Trump's image as a prophetic savior. Through real-world examples, we emphasize the dangers of political idolatry and underscore the importance of maintaining true biblical convictions, free from the distortion of any political agenda.

But that’s not all – we also dive deep into the selective interpretation of biblical texts to serve modern political narratives. From John 6:11 to Isaiah 9:6, we critique how scriptures are distorted to paint Trump as a divinely chosen figure. We highlight the critical need to preserve the integrity of scripture, whether you lean progressive or conservative, and warn against merging your faith with political ideologies. Our message is clear: only Jesus Christ is the true savior, and it’s essential to keep our faith aligned with the authentic teachings of the Bible, untainted by political bias.

Speaker 1:

So I want you to think about this. We're going to look at one more video and we're going to wrap it up. I have a video, if I can remember, I'll put it up here with the little box thing, and you can watch the video where we dive into what is Trump's belief. And somebody asked him have you ever asked God to forgive you of your sins? He's like oh, I really don't like to include God in that part. You know, I don't know who God is. He could even quote a favorite verse.

Speaker 1:

Now, that being said, I'm not voting for someone because I think they're a Christian, but me, as a Christian, I have certain values and certain beliefs that I will not bend on, and so, at the end of the day, I will vote for who is closest. Not voting to me is not an option. That's just laziness. Whatever your conviction is, vote accordingly, and that goes with anything. Stick with your conviction, but make sure it's. If you're a Christian, make sure it's a biblical conviction and not a false ideology of a made-up thing like was the second coming. So, that being said, let's look at this video and it calls out a lot of things that I believe is a massive, massive issue with the church clinging to, like he is God himself. There is an issue here, and so we're going to look at this.

Speaker 2:

If you want to know just how bad things have gotten lately, take a look at this picture being shared.

Speaker 1:

Now look at this. Who is that? That's a painting of Jesus, okay. Then an American flag? Okay, god bless America, you know, god bless the USA, all that stuff. But then you go as far as putting the ear thing on there. It's a little too much.

Speaker 2:

As I said in the recent post, I am not a liberal or a leftist, but people might know that I am, because when I see stuff like this, I have to push back, especially because this kind of stuff has gotten far worse in the last couple of years, and if you think that I'm exaggerating or being dramatic, then take a look at how this has escalated Back in 2021,. I remember being bothered by seeing this billboard in Georgia. It has a picture of Trump.

Speaker 1:

Look at this. Unto us, a sign is given and the government shall be upon his shoulders, joint heirs. This is a twisting and manipulating no matter how you want to think about it of scripture to fit an ideology. Just like other people use scripture to justify their lifestyle. It's the same concept.

Speaker 2:

And it says unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulders, which, by the way, is a quote from Isaiah 9, 6 in the Bible. The only problem is Isaiah 9, 6 isn't talking about Donald Trump at all. Instead, it's actually one of the most famous prophecies about the coming Jesus that we have from the Old Testament. So you could probably imagine just how disappointing and disturbing it was for me to see Christians taking these precious scriptures that apply to Christ and his redemption plan and to see them apply to Trump and his temporary worldly political purpose, and that was way back in 2021. I really started to see things amp up in 2023 as I started seeing a lot more people posting things like this Jesus and Donald J Trump are the two greatest men to have ever walked the earth since the beginning of humanity.

Speaker 1:

Now, we're pinpointing this, we're looking, we're, you know, zooming into this, but I also am aware that not every person who votes for or likes thinks this way. Okay, I like the guy, I do. I like the guy I like. I'm the type of person that I don't like a bunch of nonsense. Say what you got to say and let's deal with the problem and let's do this thing. Okay, Don't give me a bunch of fluff. Don't try to hold my hand and pat me on the back and pamper me with with a bunch of nonsense. Let's, let's tackle this thing, let's get it done. But a lot of people and it's usually the loudest ones we've got to recognize that it's the loudest ones that end up doing this junk and post it on there and act like Donald Trump is the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Speaker 2:

Of course, Jesus was the greatest, and that's why Jesus fully supports the second greatest man to have ever walked the earth, because he's the chosen one to save from Satan. No, he's not.

Speaker 1:

Jesus Christ was, and that's the only one to save from Satan. No, he's not. Jesus Christ was, and that's the only choice and the only option, not a political person. This is the fallacy when people start getting too political, they act like a political party is going to save this nation or this world. In reality, you end up idolizing and putting that person or that party in place of God, and that is actually in direct conflict with the word of God that Christ is the one true king, that the Lord, god, the father, is Lord of Lords. He is the one that, whether we like or don't like, allows or places people in power over the land. That scripture.

Speaker 1:

That being said, we have to carefully, carefully choose how we fall for this type of stuff, that we're not placing it in, that we're not placing someone on the throne of Christ and we end up worshiping them with stuff like this. That this is idol worship. I don't care how you think about it, your opinion doesn't matter to me. This is idol worship. This is exactly what Republicans or even independents that are on the side of criticize, the far left and the radical left and all these other people that are idolizing homosexuality. They're doing this or doing that. This is exactly the same concept, the same mindset, but it's just on the other foot and it's hard to hear. But that's the facts.

Speaker 2:

Now leaving aside the obvious gigantic moral discrepancy between the life of and the life of Jesus.

Speaker 2:

I'm pretty sure the only one that can save you from Satan is not Donald, but only Jesus Christ Christians should know that Jesus is the only one that can save the world from Satan, not Donald, and I continue to see more and more posts like this and, aside from some cringy songs being put out, claiming that Donald was the one that was chosen by God. As bad as 2023 was, 2024 is when I really started to see a disturbing of even more Christians who seem to be treating Jesus as if he merely existed to do the will of Donald rather than the other way around.

Speaker 1:

You see how that gets flipped and that's easy to do and we don't realize it. That's why we have to take constant assessment of how we view people, how we idolize people, how we uplift and put people on a pedestal. We can do this with our pastors. People do this a lot with their pastors. People do this a lot with political figures. They do this a lot with their spouses, with their kids, and it puts people in the rightful place of God.

Speaker 2:

Since the Touch Money trial, we not only saw countless conservative Christians comparing Donald Trow with Jesus on Easter week, but we also saw an uptick in pictures and artwork being sold that featured Jesus, always seeming ready to give Donald a massage. For some reason, we also see t-shirts of Jesus wearing merch, as if he's one fan, along with other shirts that always seem to get suspiciously close to putting on the same level as Christ, saying things like and Jesus, have my back. But ever since the failed assassination attempt on life, some Christians have taken it to a whole new level. They once again started reading the scripture, but there doesn't seem to be nearly as much pushback this time around, as far as I can tell. This all seemed to kick off when Jack Posobiec tweeted about the failed assassination, with many more echoing the same sentiment.

Speaker 1:

Did you know that president was shot on 6-11? And do you know that Ephesians, chapter 6, verse 11, says be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Stuff like this is blasphemous and abusing scripture for worldly gain. That is 100% what that is.

Speaker 2:

No, it doesn't, but we'll come back to that.

Speaker 1:

See all these people are cheering and they have no clue that the reference given was a bunch of nonsense and wasn't even the actual scripture.

Speaker 2:

And people everywhere started to pick up on this. In fact, even Megyn Kelly seemed to be completely touched and blown away by this apparent sign You're shot at 6 11 pm you read Ephesians 6 11.

Speaker 3:

It reads as follows in part Put on the full Hold on Ephesians.

Speaker 1:

Oh, people are so ignorant. It's obviously the first time she's ever read that or heard someone say it, because it's not Ephesians. It's like the other day in church I was reading from Philippians, right, okay, well, being funny, I said Philippians. That's the East Texas way of saying it. This girl's being serious. Lord help us.

Speaker 3:

Armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 6-11, he was shot and that's 6-11. Listen to that. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. I'm almost emotional reading it. It's just what happened to him in our country.

Speaker 1:

Hold on. So 6-11, right, all right, john 611. Let's look at new. Hold on 611. He was shot at 611.

Speaker 1:

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God in Jahan 611, and distributed them to all the peoples. Afterwards he did the same with the fish, and they all ate as much as they wanted. You can eat as much as you want. God will protect you. All right, so let's do this again. See how ignorant this gets. Let's see, let's do Matthew. That's a good one. Matthew, 6 611. Oh, give us today the food we, apparently Trump, needs to eat. Guys, it's dinner time where he is 611. All right, let's do something else. Let's do Revelation. We'll look it up. Yeah, revelation, 611. Then a white robe was given to each of them and they were told to rest a little longer until the full of their brothers and sisters, their fellow servants of Jesus, who were to be martyred, had joined them. He was a martyr. Well, martyrs die. He was almost a martyr. You see how this gets Like. You can cherry pick and pull and put 611 anywhere, and it doesn't make any sense. They just picked one that makes sense, and she didn't even pronounce it. Right, it's whatever she?

Speaker 3:

said Country this weekend is extremely grave, all right, so leaving aside the fact that she called the book of Ephesians.

Speaker 2:

There's a lot wrong with reading the Bible this way. We won't get into it all here, but the references in the Bible didn't come with the Bible. They were added in 1551 as a reference tool. So they aren't inspired by God and they aren't scripture. And besides, of course, this verse couldn't possibly guarantee that you won't suffer physical harm as a Christian, because if it did, then Paul, the person who wrote it, wouldn't have been beheaded as a martyr.

Speaker 2:

Just a couple of years later, and ever since this Ephesians 6 claim started going around, people started seeing Trump in the Bible more than ever before. This user posted saying "prophecy, amazing, anointed from being a private citizen to priest for Jehovah Almighty. And then he quoted a passage from Leviticus 8. And others have posted that same verse, such as this person who posted on Facebook saying in the Bible, the concept of blood on the right ear Leviticus 8, 22 through 24 and 14, 28, serves as a visible mark of consecration, signifying that the person is dedicated to God's service and has been set apart for a specific purpose. This act represents a physical and spiritual transformation, preparing the individual for their sacred role. And then she goes on to offer a breakdown, saying that the ear represents hearing and obedience, and that the right ear, specifically, was used to hear the word of God. Now, I have no idea where she got that from, but we'll leave that aside.

Speaker 2:

Now without even reading the verses the problem seems obvious.

Speaker 2:

If it's true that Trump, violently losing part of his ear by a bullet, means that he's chosen by God, then that would have to mean that these UFC fighters who almost lost their entire ear completely are really being chosen by God. But seriously, if we go to read the verse for ourselves, we learn that the first verse that she quoted is just about how Moses was preparing a purification offering and took the blood from a ram and smeared it on Aaron's right ear, right and big toe. So not only does this verse have nothing to do with the mutilated ear or Aaron's own blood, how do you know?

Speaker 1:

Did you check his thumb or his toe?

Speaker 2:

No, but to be consistent, Trump would also have to be bleeding from his right thumb and big toe. And then the other verse they quote the priest does the same thing for those who have a skin disease.

Speaker 1:

So no, this effort to try to apply, he could have psoriasis. Wait, no, is that psoriasis? Yeah, psoriasis, I was all got it confused with cirrhosis.

Speaker 2:

By some sort of spiritual significance to Trump in this way is to misunderstand scripture. But perhaps one of the most offensive ways that some Christians are trying to use Trump's ear injury as a way to show or prove his spiritual significance is by using pictures like this the man there is supposed to be, jesus, completely surrounded by an American flag, having his ear bandaged in the same way. That is currently once again making Jesus appear to be second place to Trump. Jesus' wounds are in his hands and his feet, not his ear, and the wounds of Jesus have more significance than Trump's ear could ever have. No matter what Trump has gone through, it's nothing in comparison to what Christ went through, so to pretend like it is is to lower the significance of what Christ has been through at the expense of elevating the significance of what.

Speaker 2:

Christ has been through at the expense of elevating the significance of what Trump has been through Again. This is all getting far too uncomfortable for the person who really cares about Scripture and God's Word. All right, so here's the thing. When it comes to progressive Christianity, it's easy to see the problem with this way of thinking. In a lot of cases, the issue is that they don't seem to realize just how much they're tying their cultural and political desires to their understanding of the Bible and Christianity. We see this when they argue that Jesus was the equivalent to a modern day social justice warrior or a Black Lives Matter advocate, and so on, while they conveniently downplay or reinterpret verses of Black Lives Matter.

Speaker 1:

Jesus was woke. He was awakened to the need of others and called out systems of injustice and oppression. Be like Jesus, be woke from a reverend. Wow, people need to wake up.

Speaker 2:

Advocate and so on, while they conveniently downplay or reinterpret verses that go against their political party's worldview and I hate saying this, but I'm afraid that so many in the conservative Christian movement are doing the exact same thing. They also don't realize just how much they're tying their cultural and political desires to their understanding of Christianity and, if I'm being honest, I see both as tools that the enemy uses to pull all of us away from the heart of the true gospel message, the simple good news that Christ died and resurrected so that way we could be rightly related to God, thereby having everlasting life. That's something that we could never get from a political party. Now, just to be clear, I am not telling you how to vote, because this video is not about voting. Instead, it's a plea for Christians to be far more aware and thoughtful when it comes to how we view politics and Trump.

Speaker 1:

Amen. So comment below who you're voting for. I'm just kidding, don't do that and start a comment war. So as reflecting, I literally have this guy. That's why I like him so much. He's very thoughtful in what he says. He wraps it up with a good takeaway and I just I think Christians like, like the children of Israel, how they wanted so badly for a King and they they forced God's hand and they ended up getting Saul. Are you following me? Now? I'm not saying that applies here, so stop using it. This is, this is the. The issue.

Speaker 1:

Christians love to misrepresent scripture and it makes us look foolish and stupid and this plays right into the devil's hands. Okay, people have unlearned verses they don't know. They couldn't quote a scripture except for the main ones that everybody preaches from that everybody says over and over again Like dive into the word. This is how we protect ourselves from this stupidity is that we actually take time to study the word of God. We don't just say things that we, we don't just regurgitate what we've heard or been fed our whole lives. We actually dive in and know the word ourselves. Like we have an actual relationship with God, we have an actual knowledge, we have a hope that we are to answer from, from within and that comes from the word of God, that comes from a relationship with Jesus, that comes from being led and filled with the Holy Spirit. This is the combination to have a healthy mind, a healthy heart and spirit, a wise mind and being able to actually when something like this. This is what gives me pause, when so many Christians who can't don't even know scripture are backing someone so intently, like if you say anything against it. It's the same atmosphere of people who were backing I mean backing Biden, and now backing Kamala, and then, I think, now she stepped down. It's the same thing. It's the same mindset that you get wrapped up. It's the same thing.

Speaker 1:

You would accuse or blame other people on the other side of the aisle for doing you're doing. I am 100, a conservative, okay, uh, and I I believe that some of the people that are out there aren't truly conservatives, like there's this one I think her name is isabella, isabella isabella. She says she's a conservative, but she dresses like a slut in. In my opinion, I don't think that's conservative. That's a very liberal way of dressing. That's just my opinion. I think we should be modest and cover our bodies and keep that for God, because we are to be the temple of the Holy Ghost for God and for our marriage. That's a part of the pleasure of being married is to be able to share that with somebody and be one, as the bible tells us to do. You can't be one if you're throwing around the psalm where everybody else can see it. It's it's not right anyways. But that being said, like he said, this is not.

Speaker 1:

This is not a video about about voting, but use your head, okay, don't just listen to what everybody else is saying. Do your research, dive in, dig deep. Just like I love looking up stuff where, where biden says stupid things and it makes me laugh, I also have to equally look up to see if the other people in the other parties who they actually say they are. Um, we want to hope for the best and hope that they are, but you can't follow a political party. Here's the bottom line, and I want to leave you with this.

Speaker 1:

Okay, at the end of the day, it's not about left or right or Republican or Democrat or conservative or liberal. It's about good and evil, and you need to know what that actually is, not by what the culture tells you, but by what the word of God tells you. So you need to be able to yourself think, pray and know truth. So then, when lies come up against you, you can actually know and stand firm on what you know and not be wavered, not be manipulated and not be uprooted so easily. When questionable things come about. There should be a pause instead of a charge when things like this come up, when pictures come out of Jesus and things like that. I could look up. You should look it up yourself. I'm not going to do it, I'm out of time.

Speaker 1:

But there are Bible verses that say that God puts people in places of power. It does not say conservative, it does not say Republican, it does not say Democrat. It says God puts them in power. And it also says to pray for those in power over you. It doesn't say when you like them, but it says to pray for them. That's it. It's a good versus evil, not a party versus another party. So I hope that shed a little light and maybe, hopefully, you're leaving here with a little bit of critical thinking. And don't forget. You can subscribe to the YouTube channel.
